Resilience - the human capacity to face, overcome, and even to be strengthened by experiences of adversity (Grotberg, 1999) - is increasingly being recognised as a useful concept by practitioners and researchers alike. It can inform and guide our work with individuals and families by inviting us to not only focus on the risk factors of people’s lives - ie. what is going wrong - but also on the protective factors – ie. what’s working well. It views distressed individuals, families and communities not as damaged, but as challenged, and shows how the strengths approach affirms the potential for repair and growth. Participants will be introduced to a range of strengths-based tools and strategies that will assist them in identifying the protective and risk factors in people’s lives, and designing interventions that aim to minimise risk and maximise protective factors
