Education investment essential in moving towards a fair state
The Queensland Council of Social Service considers the announcement of a ‘Queensland Education Trust’ is an important component of working towards a fair state.
“We know that many people and a growing number of children are being left behind and are at risk of spiraling into poverty,” says QOSS President Karyn Walsh.
“The discussion paper recognises some families are doing it tougher than others. And we welcome the fact that the government is planning specifically-targeted initiatives for those most in need.
“It’s also pleasing to see that Queenslanders are being given a chance to comment. QCOSS will definitely be providing evidence to support the need for targeted investment that benefits families experiencing disadvantage.
“We also look forward to having input into the proposed scholarships for rural, regional and disadvantaged students and for language programs.
“The investment seems to be intended for all levels and types of education and training,” says QCOSS Director, Mark Henley. “We think this is positive because it recognises that post-school education has not been in the mind-set of many families because of low education attainment and long-term unemployment caused by inter-generational poverty.
“So, while we welcome this investment, we also know there is much more to be done to support people experiencing poverty and inequality across the state. This should remain a focus – the most vulnerable people in our community require support now more than ever,” says Mark. “With more than 10 per cent of Queenslanders living in poverty – every bit helps.”
The government’s announcement echoes a recent recommendation by QCOSS:
“We recommended a ‘Fair Queensland Investment Fund’ be established to address cost of living increases, and to finance more resilient and sustainable communities,” says QCOSS President Karyn Walsh. “So we trust this is the first of many announcements that will shape up a plan for a Fair Queensland,” says Karyn.
For 50 years QCOSS has strived to promote social justice through working to eliminate inequality and disadvantage. The Queensland Council of Social Service represents 650 organisations and individuals throughout the state.
