Mark HenleyQCOSS’ latest Cost of Living Report has shown again that many low income households struggle to afford a basic standard of living. The report estimates that 10 to 12 per cent of households are struggling with a basic cost of living and the report calls for the extension of energy and transport concessions to all Health Care Card holders as one practical measure to alleviate pressure on those in most need. The major recommendation is that the government review all concessions to ensure they are effective and targeted.
In the report we highlight the problem is getting particularly worse in regions exposed to the mining boom. Areas like Mackay, Gladstone and Mount Isa have seen massive increases in the cost of housing and higher fuel and food costs only add to the current pressures.
QCOSS will continue to advocate for targeted support for low income households through its Cost of Living Report.
