It has been one year since the natural disasters which severely affected a number of communities across Queensland. There have been several recent memorials to remember affected communities, such as those held in the Lockyer Valley and Grantham. It is an important time to remember those who lost their lives, their homes and their livelihoods across the state and an opportunity to reflect on the great efforts of everyday Queenslanders to assist those worst affected.

One year on, there is still much to do for many of those who are yet to get back on their feet. Amongst them are some of the most disadvantaged people in the state whose capacity to bounce back from the disaster can be hampered by their lack of personal and financial resources. It is important that we continue to promote the need to build resilience amongst individuals and their communities. In doing so it is not just about preparing for disasters such as those experienced last year but providing individuals and communities with resources to enable them to better support each other in crises and everyday life situations.
