People, regardless of race, religion, ethnic or cultural backgrounds, have the right to access services, be included, participate freely and have fair opportunities in civil society. While some people from CALD backgrounds experience success and enjoy positive outcomes, the current reality is that a significant proportion of people from CALD communities experience barriers, prejudice, discrimination and racism.

Accessing qualified interpreters to communicate effectively with people who are not proficient or confident in English is part of an agency’s commitment to ensuring equitable access for all Queenslanders. Everyone has the right to full comprehension of information and service provided to them, as well as their rights and responsibilities.

The Australian Government is undertaking a review of its Access and Equity Framework. An Access and Equity Panel has been tasked to undertake an inquiry into the reesponsiveness of Australian Government services to Australia's culturally and linguistically diverse population. The COSS network made a joint submission, developed by QCOSS.
