Poverty is one of the most pervasive causes of social disadvantage. Poverty precludes people from having an acceptable standing of living, and denies them access to essential goods and activities. An estimated 478,000 people or 10.6% of Queenslanders are living below the poverty line. Advocating on behalf of Queenslanders experiencing poverty or at risk of poverty is a major part of QCOSS' work.

This is the annual statement from QCOSS to coincide with Anti-Poverty Week 2011. It looks at who is doing it tough in Queensland and who is suffering from financial stress. There is also information about the gap between rich and poor households, the rising cost of essentials being much higher than CPI and the increased demand for community services. Ultimately this all points to the need for a whole-of-government Fair Queensland action plan to address poverty and disadvantage in Queensland.
