In her latest video update, QCOSS CEO Aimee McVeigh talks about Queensland Labor’s election commitment to fund No Interest Loans Scheme providers, and our State Election Leaders Debate event coming up on Monday from 7:00pm.
At the event you will hear firsthand the views of our political leaders and their commitment to the community services sector. Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors, the Honourable Coralee O’Rourke MP, and the LNP’s Shadow Minister Dr Christian Rowan MP will be on hand to answer your questions – live at the Q&A! This week we welcomed the Labor party’s response to our calls to fund community organisations to administer the No Interest Loan Scheme – or NILS.
If re-elected, the ALP have committed to investing $4 million over two years for financial resilience workers to provide vulnerable Queenslanders with support to access the scheme.
Last year more than 300,000 payday loans and consumer leases were taken out in Queensland – loans which can attract fees that are equivalent to about 800% interest.
This election commitment will fund 20 community sector workers to deliver NILS, increasing access to safe and ethical credit during the worst economic downturn since the great depression.
This is a great win for our sector and for Queenslanders – well done to everyone involved in the Fund NILS campaign.
There is more to be done – and we’re calling on all parties to match the Labor Party’s commitment.
Also on the election – we’re really looking forward to hearing from the Minister for Communities, Disability Services and Seniors, the Honorable Coralee O’Rourke, as well as the LNP’s Shadow Minister, Dr Christian Rowan on Monday night at our State Election Leaders Debate.
They’ll be on hand to answer your questions about what their parties would do for people experiencing disadvantage, and our sector if elected.
The event is free for QCOSS members, and we would really love you to get involved by attending and submitting your questions – either live on the night, or before hand to our events team.
Have a great weekend. Until next week, take care.
