Energy Savvy Families

The Energy Savvy Families program is a new initiative designed to help families across regional Queensland learn more about their energy use and manage their energy bills. Program participants will have the convenience of monthly billing and access to helpful tools and information to assist them in managing electricity costs.

The program is a combined initiative of QCOSS, Ergon Energy Retail, CitySmart and the Queensland Government.

5,500 homes in 10 regional centres across the State will receive digital electricity meters which will allow them to pay their electricity bills in smaller, more manageable monthly amounts rather than receiving quarterly bills. This is designed to ease the risk of bill shock.

Monthly billing will be combined with local community support and educational resources to help families understand when and how they are using electricity.

QCOSS will be working with local community champions in each region to identify program participants and help answer questions about the program and provide additional education and advice.

The education package will provide access to CitySmart’s Reduce Your Juice app, which allows families to play games on their smartphones and tablets to learn more about their energy use and gives them the chance to win energy-efficient appliance packages.

Program participants will also be able to access Ergon Retail’s online HomeSmart portal, an integrated system that can help families understand and monitor how they use electricity at home and track energy use against their budgets.
