This one day course is for social workers who have some prior knowledge of Focused Psychological Strategies – from previous trainings and/or professional experience.

Reviews of the main theories that inform the strategies – psychoeducation, cognitive-behavioural, mindfulness, psychoanalysis and systems theory – will be complemented by extended periods of experiential work. This will offer participants the opportunity to gain experience applying the strategies in specific role-playing exercises, within a coherent theoretical framework. Information regarding targeting particular strategies to discrete client groups will also guide the exercises.

A key theme will be ‘integration’ – integrating both the theoretical perspectives and practical strategies. For example, dovetailing relaxation and cognitive techniques (by monitoring physical responses while labelling cognitive distortions) builds-on the stand-alone cognitive and relaxation strategies. Such integrations enrich the strategies’ accessibility and longer-term sustainability.

In addition, small and large group discussions, spread throughout the day, will offer participants the chance to consolidate their experience by articulating their learning, clarifying issues, and sharing their ideas and feelings.

Focused Psychological Strategies benefit the quality and efficacy of casework relationships by adding a deeper psychological dimension to social work practice, and are especially relevant for mental health settings.

Who should attend?

Social workers who are interested in developing their mental health casework skills, including applying for Accredited mental health social worker status.

Learning Outcomes?

  • Knowledge of how to apply the strategies and practice framework in relation to a variety of client groups – including those presenting with anxiety, depression, grief & loss, parenting and relational issues.
  • The ability to match specific strategies to clients’ needs, review outcomes, and offer targeted follow-up services.
