Employer: Benarrawa Community Development Association
Closing Date: 23 August 2019
We need new VOLUNTEER management committee members for our small organisation, Benarrawa Community Development Association. Benarrawa acknowledges the Traditional Owners of this land. Benarrawa is an Jagera/Yuggera word, which stands for the area surrounding the Oxley Creek and means ‘place of wet’. Benarrawa CDA adopted this name with permission from some Jagera Elders and the Brisbane Council of Elders in the mid 1990s.
Benarrawa is a small and beautiful incorporated not-for-profit community organisation. We work with local people and other organisations for a just, welcoming and inclusive community. We predominantly use community development methodology in working with local people across southwest Brisbane to together create, develop and sustain positive initiatives which address issues of poverty, social and economic isolation and exclusion, loneliness, and general neighbourhood concerns. Community Development connects people, organisations and businesses to build relationships and together respond to needs in the community. It involves listening and learning together to create and strengthen communities that are welcoming, inclusive and viable.
We work from our centre at 79 Waratah Ave, Graceville, but our community development work builds supportive relationships with people all over Brisbane.
We also have a community garden, and regular activities such as:
Every Sunday, 7-9am: Graceville Community Garden gatherings
Every Wednesday, 9.30-11.30am: Nature Babes Playgroup
Every Wednesday, 7-9am: Bush Tucker Garden working bee
Benarrawa Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Solidarity Group (BenATSI) meets regularly to share information and learn.
• Cultural Awareness Workshops
• Survival Day Ceremony
• Sorry Day Ceremony
• Mabo Day Lunch
• Elders’ Lunch
We need to work locally, now more than ever. If you would like to become involved, meet people, help your community or just find out more, please contact us.
