Emerging Voices

With one in eight Queenslanders experiencing poverty (QCOSS Indicators of Poverty and Disadvantage Report, 2013), policy decisions that support vulnerable people to participate and contribute to the social and economic life of the community are critical. To be well targeted and effective, these decisions need to reflect an understanding of the day to day life of people who experience poverty and disadvantage, in the context of the communities in which they live.

The QCOSS Emerging Voices Project supports a long term program of empowering current and potential consumers to have a voice in key policy reforms, collective problem solving, and generating community based ideas and action. This project brings together a range of stakeholders to achieve a range of objectives including:

  • To establish a mechanism for connecting the voice of current and potential consumers of community services to the Queensland social and economic policy agenda. The strength and reach of this mechanism will grow over time.
  • To provide policy makers with access to evidence, ideas and perspectives needed to inform good policy decisions.
  • To provide the future generation of Queenslanders with confidence and capability to actively engage as a part of the system through informing its policies and bringing them to life.

The QCOSS Emerging Voices project provides an ongoing, mechanism for citizens to visibly and actively contribute to collective solution finding around current policy challenges.
