Following the success of the Bringing the NDIS to Life in Townsville event in June 2016, we again joined forces with Queenslanders With Disability Network (QDN) and Townsville City Council (TCC) to host the next part of the conversation, Changing Lives, Changing Communities in May 2017. More than 100 people took part over two days which informed, inspired and sparked dialogue between community groups to co-design projects. Participants left feeling invigorated and with a clear sense of purpose.

More than 5,000 children were without a house on Census night in 2016 says ABS data released today. 2016 census figures released by the ABS today show that homelessness has risen nine per cent in Queensland between 2011 and 2016. “Any increase in homelessness is unacceptable,” said Mark Henley, Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) CEO. “There are more than 21,500 people who are homeless every night in Queensland.

Yesterday the Australian Government quietly announced the reintroduction of mandatory drug testing for people accessing income support, despite that fact that there is no evidence of a causal link between people receiving this benefit and those with drug problems.

The Creating Thriving Communities in Queensland roundtable was initiated and hosted by the Hon. Coralee O’Rourke, Minister for the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors, and Mark Henley, CEO, QCOSS. The purpose of the roundtable was to bring people together, from across Australia and Queensland, to discuss the potential of place-based approaches to help build thriving communities throughout the State. To inform the Investment Management Strategy process for Neighbourhood Centres in Queensland, the Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) and Queensland Families and Communities Association (QFCA) facilitated five consultation forums across the state – in Brisbane, Toowoomba, Rockhampton, Cairns, and one teleconference session. 82 per cent of the 122 funded neighbourhood centres in Queensland engaged in the consultation and participation was proportionately well distributed in terms of number of funded sites, regions and localities.
