Single age pensioners renting in the private market are likely to be paying nearly half their pension on rent, according to the latest Cost of Living Report released by QCOSS today (October 1, 2014).

The Cost of Living Report: Special Edition – The cost of living and age pensioner households, Issue 2 shows that age pensioners renting in the private market in Brisbane are unable to afford the most basic standard of living.

QCOSS CEO Mark Henley said pensioners who didn’t own their own home were struggling on two fronts, with lengthy waiting lists for suitable social housing, and with Commonwealth Rent Assistance failing to meet the increasing cost of renting in the private market.

“Concessions and government contributions undoubtedly provide a lifeline for pensioners which is why it is so important that these supports are targeted to those who need them most to survive,” he said.
