QCOSS submission to the QCA on retail electricity prices for Queensland 2020-21

As the cost of essentials continue to increase, those on the lowest incomes are being further left behind. With financial pressures increasing, the cost of energy remains a key issue for the communities across regional Queensland, and must be front of mind for the QCA.

In this submission, we argue that the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA), who are setting the regional electricity prices for 2020-21, must:

  • Ensure prices are no high than the Default Market Offer.
  • The importance of including options for cost reflective tariffs
  • We do not agree with the percentage Standing Offer Adjustment and QCA should not simply carry forward the value of five per cent for 2020-21.
  • Updating prices based on efficient Retail Costs.

As  we  move  into  a  period  of  major  transition  to  a future  electricity  gridwe  encourage  QCA  to consider how it’s role must shiftto optimally support an effective transition.
