At the completion of the workshop, participants will have: Knowledge of a theoretical framework, based on Cybernetics Theory, which provides a context for understanding how individuals and families get stuck in problematic patterns of thought, feeling and behaviour, and what is required for change. Understanding of a number of intervention techniques derived from this theory, based on the work of Michael White (Systemic Cybernetic and Narrative Therapy) and Steve de Shazer and colleagues (Solution-Focused Brief Therapy), which are effective in facilitating change.

Cybernetics is the study of control processes in systems, especially analysis of the flow of information in closed systems.

Gregory Bateson applied this concept to explain how individuals and families become stuck in repetitive loops of unproductive behaviour.

His ideas significantly influenced a number of popular systems-based approaches to therapy designed to facilitate change.

This workshop provides a summary of the assumptions of the Systemic Cybernetic Approach to Therapy, and an explanation of how these ideas are applied (intervention strategies) in Michael White’s Cybernetic Therapy and Narrative Therapy, and in Solution-Focused Brief Therapy.
