Strengthening our update

The Capricornia Leadership Group held a meeting in the last week of April during which they worked through a program logic for 2018. This process facilitated the greater understanding of the vision this group has for child and family support connectedness and work together in 2018. This year, the Leadership Group will be focusing their efforts on documenting their own partnerships and modeling cohesive approaches.

This week EveryChild CQ will be hosting their second Community Engagement Planning meeting. As a collective impact initiative with a broad community engagement focus, these planning meetings provide crucial context for the Capricornia Leadership Group. We know that place based activities need to be led and informed by local community, and yet often the resources available (including time!) make it a challenge to engage robustly with community. A partnership with an initiative such as EveryChild CQ, with whom we have identified shared goals, lessens the risk of fragmented effort on the ground.

Fraser Coast

Members of the Leadership Group for the Fraser Coast place-based initiative contributed their comments on aspects of Place-based work:

On the importance of inclusion of Traditional Owners and members of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community when supporting communities in-place: “Including Traditional Owners shows respect and acknowledgment – actions speak louder than words. The wisdom of Elders creates the future,” advised Aunty Marj Speedy.

On the comparison of place-based work with other initiatives in the region: “While our interagency activities have identified issues, it is the place-based work that has provided the opportunity to develop and implement solutions,” shared Kirsti Kee

Whole of Initiative

Next week, the Department of Communities, Disability Services and Seniors with the Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) will be hosting the first regional Creating Thriving Communities roundtable event in Townsville. At this event we will be discussing the latest research and policy informing place based initiatives and will be identifying opportunities to work together across Queensland.
