Queensland Council of Social Service (QCOSS) is ecstatic that the vote on marriage equality has come back with a resounding YES from across Australia today.

Whatever way you look at it – across the Australia, state by state, or electorate by electorate – Australians have made their voices heard supporting lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer people having the same rights as everyone else to marry the person they love.

“We are now asking every Australian Parliamentarian to take up their responsibility and expedite the passage of this legislation.  It is essential that it retains the necessary human rights protections all Australian people currently enjoy,” QCOSS CEO Mr Mark Henley said.

In now acting on this result the Parliament must not trade away existing important anti-discrimination protections for all Australians in return for the right to marry.
